Loon Choir Join Parliament of Trees!

Loon Choir Join Parliament of Trees!

Hey, friends! Well, more good news: Parliament of Trees is proud to welcome Loon Choir into our loving, label-y arms! Loon Choir is a group of 7 people that hail from Ottawa, Canada; they have been at this for a good 3 years, have released a ton of music and, additionally, are SO GOOD. LISTEN TO THIS!:

So good, hey? I TOLD YOU. Simultaneously epic and intimate; muscular and vulnerable. Beautiful mix. Also that little guitar bit in the middle *kills* me. Anyway, lucky for you (and me (and everyone)), they have a new album coming out on June 2nd with us! It's called "Fire Poems". You can get teased for it here or listen to a bunch of their music here or, if you live in Ottawa (or have access to Ottawa through some means), you can go to a fun listening party at Arrow & Loon on May 20th!

Of course, recorded music is only part of the experience with Loon Choir; you have a 7-piece band here that obviously relishes the stage. With that in mind, I bring your attention to the flowering buds of their summer tour...more dates to come soon, but here's what's confirmed so far!:

June 2 - CD Release in Ottawa @ The Rainbow with Fire & Neon and David Little

June 13 - NXNE - Toronto - The Boat - 9pm
June 23 - FeverFest @ Barley Mow - 12:30 set time

Kalle Mattson's New EP

Kalle Mattson's New EP

Hey, Parliamentarians of Treesers! Today brings us news of ome incredible new music in the form of Kalle Mattson's new EP "Lives In Between" coming out May 1st, 2012! Following up on last year's "Anchors" and the insane response to the video for Thick as Thieves (over 1 million views!), this new EP is the first release featuring the band's new lineup and it sounds beautiful...we here at Parliament of Trees HQ can't stop listening to it. It's such a warm, inviting recording and the songs are's another little masterpiece from this continually surprising band, and a firm indicator of just how amazing the new album will be when it comes out!

Official press release:

In the three short years since Kalle (kāl) Mattson began writing songs, he and his band have grown from a Dylan-influenced solo act into a full on experimental folk-rock quintet. With two full-lengths already under his young belt, and a video for “Thick As Thieves” from the previous album “Anchors“ closing in on almost One Million views, Kalle Mattson returns May 1st with a new five song EP - “Lives In Between”. Recorded at the end of 2011, and mastered by Gavin Gardiner (The Wooden Sky), “Lives In Between” is the first release with a new lineup and a new sound. It serves as both a preview and a precursor to a new full-length album to be recorded in 2012, all the while being a cohesive piece in and of itself.

With the release of Kalle Mattson’s debut album "Whisper Bee” (2009), the attention of both Canadian and British music lovers was grabbed and went on to earn Kalle two Northern Ontario Music Award nominations and a Top 100 placement in the Billboard World SongContest. The second full length album "Anchors" (2011) was mixed by Howie Beck (Feist, Jason Collett, Hayden, etc.), mastered at the legendary Bernie Grudman Studios (Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Band) and released by Winnipeg label Parliament Of Trees (The Details/Paperbacks). “Anchors” received rave reviews that culminated in numerous year end "Best Of" lists and a song placement on Degrassi, while the band hit the road in support of the album with stops along the way at CMW, NXNE, COCA, and Ottawa Bluesfest. The album also received a pair of Northern Ontario Music Award nominations for Album of the Year (Group) & SOCAN Songwriter of the Year.

In November 2011 Kalle Mattson’s music video for "Thick As Thieves" went viral. With almost 1,000,000 views to date, the video depicts the history of the world using stop-motion animation. Created for only $250 in materials, it was covered by such media outlets as Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, Much Music, Yahoo, and CBS News, amongst others and leading The National Post to highlight Kalle Mattson as one of five musicians poised to breakout in 2012.

Kalle Mattson and his band will tour coast to coast in support of “Lives In Between” over the next six months. Watch for them in a town near you soon.

Watch this space for more Kalle Mattson and Parliament of Trees news soon! 2012 is going to be a great year.

Kalle Mattson - Thick As Thieves (Official Video) from Kevin Parry on Vimeo.

This is fun news...Parliament of Trees artists Kalle Mattson had their video for "Thick as Thieves" added to the front page at yesterday afternoon, and has since been viewed 10,000 times!  Last week the video was added to one of the world's largest cartoon sites at lead to Vimeo picking up the video as a "Video We Like" on their front page.

The video, which cost the band $250 in materials to make, was created by Kevin Perry. In it, the history of the world is depicted in 3 minutes and 30 seconds using stop motion animation. All of the characters in the video are made of cut pieces of paper, and the background is made of fabric that the band got from Salvation Army.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it above and add to the count! And be sure to catch Kalle Mattson on tour with The Details over the next two weeks!

Kalle Mattson joins Parliament of Trees!

Kalle Mattson joins Parliament of Trees!

"Kalle Mattson" was once just the incredibly talented Kalle Wainio playing under the name Kalle Mattson, but slowly "Kalle Mattson" became Kalle Mattson, a peerless 4-piece band from Sault Ste. Marie. In the coming months, Kalle Mattson will also become the following 3 things:

1. Full-time residents of the city of Ottawa.

2. Your new favourite band, and

3. The newest band on PARLIAMENT OF TREES!

Kalle Mattson have been performing with grace and vigour all over Canada for the last several years, sharing stages with such luminaries as The Wooden Sky, Great Bloomers, You Say Party!, Fred Eaglesmith, Josh Ritter, Cuff The Duke, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Elliott Brood, Cowboy Junkies and Blue Rodeo. While that list may give you some indication of where the band fits in on the Musical Spectrum, it's definitely not the full story.

The assured performance, the quality songwriting, the versitility and energy and the occasional spare simplicity that must have powered Kalle's early solo gigs just shines in this unique and beautiful way in Kalle Mattson. These guys have a really special thing going here, and it's an honour for us to welcome them to Parliament of Trees.

We're just making some plans now. Part of that plan will see them touring this fall with The Details (dates coming soon!). Another part is us re-releasing their latest album, Anchors, in October. New music? More perfection? All in good time. While you wait, please acquaint yourself with their existing body of work and get as excited as we are about them!

It's a thrill for us to see our little label grow, both in terms of human resources and exponential awesomeness, but our primary role here is to be curators and supporters of great music and great people. Kalle Mattson is both of those things, and we can't wait for you to hear them!

Give a listen to "Anchors", below. Check out their Bandcamp page to get a few free tracks or to buy the damn thing (you don't have to wait for our re-release!). And go see them next month if you live in these cities:

August 7th- Sault Ste Marie @Loplops
August 10th- Kitchener On @ The Boathouse
August 11th- Quebec City Qc @Le Cercle
August 12th- Montreal Qc @O Patro Vys
August 13th-  Wakefield Qc @Blacksheep Inn
August 25th- Sault Ste Marie @Loplops w/Olenka & The Autumn Lovers

Then: Friend them, fan them, find them on multiple platforms:

Thank you for your kind attention, more to come soon!

Ian La Rue & The Heartbeat City Join Parliament of Trees!

Ian La Rue & The Heartbeat City Join Parliament of Trees!

A few weeks ago, I went to see Ian La Rue play with his new band, The Hearbeat City, at the Lo Pub in our hometown. He's my favourite singer in Winnipeg, and also one of my favourites of all time, anywhere, and of course he didn't disappoint.

Ian has long been an artist who lets his material adapt to the situation at hand; I've seen him play solo (singer/songwriter style), solo enhanced with loops and electronics, or backed by all-out rock bands. The Heartbeat City, which he's founded with his wife, Lea, manages to combine all these styles, alternating between spareness and density; fragility and hammering drive. His lyrics remain as powerful as ever, too; poetic without being coy, engaged with the greater world while remaining deeply personal. A stunningly fresh approach and yet a perfect distillation of what's come before; exactly what you'd hope for from an performer in a new situation.

Ian is a vitally important artist to me personally, to the city he lives in, and to music in general. And so, obviously, I'm extremely proud to welcome Ian La Rue and The Heartbeat City to Parliament of Trees today!

If you haven't experienced his music before, his catalogue has been added to the site. Give them a listen right here:

Additionally, a set of demos are included here for the upcoming Heartbeat City release (coming in 2012):

And you can purchase any of the material above at this link.

So please, indulge in the music; I have no doubt that Ian will become a favourite for you, too, and that the anticipation for next year's release will become unbearable for us all. :)

More to come very soon!

Help The Details Go Gold!

Help The Details Go Gold!

Here at Parliament of Trees headquarters, we are practically overrun with awards, commendations and honorary doctorates from numerous organizations. For example, I am right now staring at a prestigious Golden Grapes award we received for "Thickest CD - 2004", in honour of the unplayable, 25-inch thick disc we released for the long-forgotten Finnish ska duo Jitterbug Jones.

One thing we have never done, however, in our well-decorated life as The World's Smallest Record Label is get one of our artists in the TOP 18 of the Canadian College Charts (as compiled by Earshot!)! Sure, there have been some 30s and some 22s and what have you, but never have we sailed past the elusive 18 MARK. At this moment, our fair DETAILS, with their new album "Lost Art" have staggered within spitting distance of our lofty, secretly harboured goal, reaching...19! And so now we ask you for your help, to push them ever further, into the uncharted...uh, charts.

How do you help? TWEET/EMAIL/CALL YOUR LOCAL COLLEGE STATION! Tell 'em to play some Details, a little "Weightless in the Dark" (their current single), perhaps, and let's see what we can do. Maybe we can push it to our long sought after 18...or maybe...HIGHER!

And, hey...thank you, college radio folk - those on-air, behind the scenes, and all the people who support 'em - for helping The Details get heard, and for doing so much work already! You people are incredible.

Parliament of Trees 2011!

Hey, all! I know 2011 technically began somewhere around January 1st, but here at Parliament of Trees, we like to move at a more reflective pace; take in a nice deep breath, hold it for...uh...three full months, and then gently exhale a MANIC RELEASE SCHEDULE for the once "new" year!

This year will see the release of new music by The Details, Yoyote (featuring me (Doug) and Kevin from The Paperbacks),  Gothenburg Vandalism, The Bonaduces, a Doug McLean solo EP, and so much more!

But we have to start somewhere, so let's begin with Yoyote! Taking advantage of the current Paperbacks hiatus, Kevin and I have joined with some awesome friends to make a ton of new music! We're just setting out our recording plans, but we'll have new music available very, very soon. In the meantime, if you happen to be in Winnipeg, Canada on April 15th (also the release date of this), you can come see us play with our friends Nova (featuring Greg McPherson, Jackie Hogue and Molly McCracken) and Heartbeat City (featuring lovebirds Ian and Lea Neufeld-La Rue), and get a taste of what's to come!

The Details! Their new album "Lost Art" will be available May 31st, and it's absolutely amazing! It's been just over three years since their last CD, and they have spent that time well; it's been used crafting, road-testing, recording (with The Weakerthans' Stephen Carroll and Brandon Reid (who works with The National)) and preparing this release. Here they are performing one of the new tunes:

Gothenburg Vandalism! Coming this Spring, Gothenburg Vandalism will be sharing their first EP's worth of material with you. Here's a video for their song "Dressing Up For You"

The Bonaduces! The first new recordings in...uh, a really long time! Here's us playing a month or so ago in Winnipeg:

Douglas James McLean! You may be noticing a theme to some of this by now, but: shh. And sorry about the longer name, I'm looking for improved Googlability. Anyways, this'll be more along the lines of this type of thing:

Plus: more! Really! It's going to be a busy, mysterious, confusing, beautiful 2011 at Parliament of Trees, and I invite you to join my friends and I in this in whatever way you'd like to be involved. Because music is pretty much the best thing ever, but it's even better than the best thing ever when your friends are around.

Keep checking us out here, or talk to us:

Love and Rockets,
